At-Will Employment — Judicial Decisions and Whistleblower Protections. Attendees will learn about at-will employment and the exceptions that exist to the rule that an employee may be terminated at any time. The discussion will focus mainly on the employee handbook and public policy exception to the doctrine and whistleblower protections.

Severance Agreements — Many employment terminations result in severance agreements. This discussion will cover severance agreement provisions and negotiating points to expect as well as the do’s and don’ts of a severance agreement.

Discrimination and Retaliation — In this segment, presenters will discuss the federal, state, and local laws that protect employees from discrimination and termination, and will help practitioners recognize viable discrimination and retaliation claims.

Termination of Unionized Employees in the Private Sector — This section will explore the common procedures available to a unionized employee including the process under a collective bargaining agreement, the associated “just cause” provisions, and the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA), and will provide guidance on how an attorney may assist a terminated unionized employee.
