New Changes to New York State CLE Requirements — Please Be Advised
Please review the following correspondence from the New York State CLE Board regarding a new category of CLE Credit and a new change to New York State CLE Requirements for experienced attorneys.
EFFECTIVE JANUARY 1, 2018: NEW CATEGORY OF CLE CREDIT: “DIVERSITY, INCLUSION AND ELIMINATION OF BIAS”
On January 1, 2018, a new category of CLE credit in New York: “Diversity, Inclusion and Elimination of Bias” will become effective. The definition of the new category of credit is as follows:
“Diversity, Inclusion and Elimination of Bias courses, programs and activities must relate to the practice of law and may include, among other things, implicit and explicit bias, equal access to justice, serving a diverse population, diversity and inclusion initiatives in the legal profession, and sensitivity to cultural and other differences when interacting with members of the public, judges, jurors, litigants, attorneys and court personnel.”
These programs may include, among other things, diversity, inclusion and elimination of bias based on, for example, race, ethnicity, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, religion, age or disability.
EFFECTIVE JULY 1, 2018: CHANGE TO EXPERIENCED ATTORNEY BIENNIAL CLE REQUIREMENT TO INCLUDE ONE CREDIT HOUR IN DIVERSITY, INCLUSION AND ELIMINATION OF BIAS
Experienced attorneys (those admitted to the New York Bar for more than 2 years) who are due to re-register on or after July 1, 2018 must complete at least one (1) credit hour in Diversity, Inclusion and Elimination of Bias. This change does not add to the current experienced attorney biennial CLE requirement of twenty-four (24) credit hours, nor does it change the requirement that experienced attorneys earn at least four (4) credit hours in Ethics and Professionalism.
You may view the revised section of the CLE Program Rules (22 NYCRR 1500.22(a)) setting forth the change to the biennial CLE requirement for experienced attorneys here. There is no change to the newly admitted attorney biennial CLE requirement.
Should you have any questions or concerns regarding these changes, please do not hesitate to email us at: email@example.com or call us at 718-624-0675 ext. 206. Thank you.
